World Trademark Review Honors Intellectual Property Law Firm Brinks Gilson & Lione for Seventh Consecutive Year
Published By World Trademark Review 1000 January 26, 2017

CHICAGO—Intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione has again received top recognition in the seventh annual edition of World Trademark Review 1000—The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals (WTR 1000). The publication placed Brinks in the Gold Band for Illinois and in the Silver Band nationally for trademark matters for the seventh year in a row.

“Brinks Gilson & Lione is a wonderful IP boutique and a known leader,” stated one source for the publication. Another noted that Brinks “…possesses a tremendous trademark practice. Its depth of experience and level of clientele mean that it is certainly deserving of high accolades and its gold ranking.”

Four Brinks shareholders—Jerome Gilson, David S. Fleming, Jeffery A. Handelman, and Howard Michael—received individual recognition for their achievements in trademark litigation.

Jerome Gilson, who received World Trademark Review’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and is a member of the IP Hall of Fame, is again one of only two individual attorneys named an Illinois Luminary. WTR 1000 notes that Gilson, who has practiced trademark and unfair competition law for more than 50 years and who is the original author of the definitive treatise Gilson on Trademarks, laid the groundwork for Brinks’ trademark group’s successes. One peer commends him as “simply legendary,” while another states, “He is a personal hero of mine.”

David Fleming was again named to the Silver Band, Enforcement and Litigation, in national rankings, and to the Gold Band, Enforcement and Litigation, in rankings for Illinois. Fleming has “profound knowledge and takes a pragmatic approach to enforcement,” noted a WTR 1000 source. “Highly experienced as both a litigator and a counsellor, he gives excellent advice and is everything you would look for in a lawyer,” stated another peer.

WTR 1000 calls Jeffery Handelman a revered authority in the branding world, and again named him to the Silver Band, Enforcement and Litigation, in its Illinois rankings. The publication notes that Handelman, author of the two-volume Guide to TTAB Practice, has “a really robust practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office” and that he can “navigate the federal courts with his eyes closed.”

Howard Michael was named to the Bronze Band, Enforcement and Litigation, in Illinois. WTR 1000 notes that Michael, like his colleague David Fleming, is well rounded as both a litigator and a counselor, and is particularly gifted at stamping out counterfeiting. Michael is currently co-chair of Brinks’ trademark practice group.

WTR 1000 seeks to serve as a definitive and comprehensive guide to locating the best trademark law practitioners worldwide. The publication’s research process involves hundreds of interviews with attorneys and clients across the globe, and reflects the depth of experience, market presence, and level of work on which firms are engaged.
