CHICAGO—Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States, has elected three attorneys as shareholders, effective January 1, 2018. They are Betsy J. Derwinski and E. Brandon Nykiel in Chicago, and Alejandro (Alex) J. Fernandez in Tampa, Fla.

“Betsy, Brandon and Alex represent the best of Brinks Gilson & Lione—talent, accomplishment, and diversity,” said Brinks president Gustavo Siller. “I’m delighted to welcome them as shareholders."

Betsy Derwinski focuses her practice on preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications. She also provides patentability, validity, and infringement analyses and opinions, and counsels clients on portfolio management and strategic planning. Derwinski currently devotes a significant portion of her practice to leading athletic footwear and apparel manufacturers; she also has extensive background in protecting medical device technologies. Derwinski holds a J.D. from DePaul University College of Law and a B.S. in biology and chemistry from the College of William & Mary.

Brandon Nykiel advises clients with electrical and electrical-mechanical innovations on a range of intellectual property rights issues, focusing his practice on patent preparation, prosecution, and opinions, as well as clearance work and right-to-use analyses. Nykiel graduated cum laude with a J.D. from The John Marshall Law School. He holds a B.S. magna cum laude and an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton.

Alex Fernandez manages Brinks’ Tampa office, which the firm opened in 2016 in response to growing demand for experienced intellectual property attorneys to represent clients at the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He focuses his practice on patent, trademark, trade dress, and copyright litigation and transactions in areas including pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, telecommunications, and energy. Fernandez earned his J.D. and Franklin Pierce Intellectual Property Law Certificate from the University of New Hampshire School of Law, and holds a B.S. in biology with a minor in chemistry from Palm Beach Atlantic University.
