Brinks Gilson & Lione's Gary Ropski and Jennifer Fox guide Team USA to success at the 30th annual International Patent Cup Regatta
June 06, 2018

CHICAGO  – Brinks Gilson & Lione’s Gary Ropski and Jennifer Fox sailed with Team USA to a second-place finish at last week’s 30th annual Patent Cup Regatta, hosted at the St. Thomas Sailing Center in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Patent practitioner-led teams from Brazil, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Germany and the US competed for the coveted Cup in the warm waters of the Caribbean. Team USA’s crew also included Marcus Thymian of McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff and Ian Schillebeeckx from Cofactor Genomics.

“It was a great few days of sailing,” said IP litigator Ropski, who was competing in his 12th Patent Cup. “The competition continues to be an excellent opportunity to build camaraderie with our colleagues across the world, and I am already looking ahead to a victorious 2019 in France.”

“Even though we didn’t capture another cup for Team USA, I think it’s safe to say that the amicable but close racing with our international peers was a victory for everyone,” added Fox, co-chair of Brinks’ biopharma practice group and a member of the firm’s Board of Directors.

The annual competition was established in 1989 by two patent attorneys, one French and one German. The two created the friendly competition to promote international cooperation and explore sailing venues across the globe. In accordance with the competition’s charter, half of the members of each team must be patent professionals.

Team USA has navigated a course to victory three times, winning the cup in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
