Brinks Gilson & Lione Shareholder Marc Richards Elected President of Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago
June 01, 2020

CHICAGO—On May 20, 2020, Marc V. Richards, shareholder at intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione (“Brinks”), was installed as president of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (“IPLAC”), the oldest intellectual property law association in the United States, operating since 1884.

Richards has been actively involved with IPLAC since 1993. He most recently served as president-elect of the organization, and was previously treasurer (2011-2013) and a member of the Board of Managers (2002-2004).

Richards has spent his entire legal career—more than 25 years—as an intellectual property attorney at Brinks, one of the largest IP law firms in the United States. After receiving a chemical engineering degree and Professional Engineer license while developing expertise as a process control systems engineer, Richards obtained his law degree and has since helped secure and defend innovations for some of the world’s largest high-performing companies and for the newest high-tech start-ups. As a seasoned attorney, Marc leads large client teams and co-chairs the Chemical, Energy and Agriculture Industry Practice Group at Brinks. His experience in litigation, patent office inter partes proceedings and patent prosecution translates into confident navigation for clients involved in complex intellectual property matters.

Richards follows a long line of current and former shareholders of Brinks who also held the office of President of IPLAC.  “I am honored to have been chosen to lead this association of intellectual property attorneys and professionals.  I follow in the footsteps of many renowned Chicago attorneys and plan to modernize IPLAC with a dynamic and vibrant online platform that is responsive to the needs of our diverse membership during these tumultuous times.”

IPLAC provides an unmatched opportunity to network with intellectual property professionals in the Chicago area, and well as providing MCLE accredited educational seminars. The organization also offers intellectual property professionals an opportunity to be an active advocate in the development and protection of intellectual property law.
