Brinks Gilson & Lione Honored for Sixth Consecutive Year by World Trademark Review

CHICAGO—Intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione has received top honors for the sixth consecutive year in the recently released sixth annual edition of World Trademark Review 1000—The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals (WTR 1000).

Brinks, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States, again placed in the Gold Band for Illinois and in the Silver Band nationally for trademark matters.

“Brinks Gilson & Lione has for a long time been the pre-eminent trademark boutique in Chicago,” said one source cited by WTR 1000. The publication notes that the firm’s “A-to-Z trademark offering is highly prized by big-name enterprises, both domestic and foreign.”

WTR 1000 also recognized four individual Brinks trademark attorneys—Jerome Gilson, David S. Fleming, Jeffery A. Handelman, and Scott J. Slavick—based on positive feedback from market sources with knowledge of their respective practices.

Jerome Gilson, who in 2011 received World Trademark Review’s Lifetime Achievement Award, is again one of only two attorneys listed in the individual Illinois Luminaries category. An IP Hall of Fame member, Gilson has practiced trademark and unfair competition law for more than 50 years at the firm that bears his name. WTR 1000 notes that he is a perennial subject of praise as the original author of the multi-volume law treatise Gilson on Trademarks.

David Fleming was again named to the Silver Band, Enforcement and Litigation, in national rankings, and to the Gold Band, Enforcement and Litigation, among attorneys in Illinois. Formerly the chair of Brinks’ trademark litigation practice, and currently serving as the firm’s general counsel, Fleming handles trademark and unfair competition matters and is co-author of the book Trademark Litigation Practice. He also served as counsel to the International Trademark Association (INTA). Sources cited by WTR 1000 say that Fleming is “well respected and an industry dean” and, while being “incredibly” client-oriented is “able to provide incisive, trademark-specific advice.”

In again recognizing shareholder Jeffery Handelman with Silver Band status in Enforcement and Litigation for Illinois, WTR 1000 notes that his two-volume Guide to TTAB Practice “lies dog-eared on the desk of every practitioner worth his salt.” Sources call Handelman a “phenomenal lawyer” and praise his client focus. The former chair of Brinks' trademark practice group and past co-chair of its litigation department, Handelman has more than 30 years' experience handling trademark infringement disputes for some of the world's most iconic brands.

Again this year WTR 1000 honored Brinks shareholder Scott Slavick with Silver Band status for Prosecution and Strategy, and Bronze Band status for Enforcement and Litigation among Illinois attorneys. The publication notes that large enterprises consult the “prosecution and counselling ace” at the outset of the branding process, and states that Slavick “devises social media policies which have a strong enforcement bottom line, while still leaving room for the innovative use of trademarks in the digital world.” Slavick is a frequently published author and speaker on a range of topics relating to trademark law.

WTR 1000 describes itself as the most comprehensive and definitive list of the world’s leading trademark private practitioners and the only stand-alone publication to recommend individual practitioners and their firms exclusively in this field. Firms qualify for a listing based on their depth of experience, market presence, and the level of work on which they are typically instructed, as determined by WTR 1000’s research through attorneys and their clients involved with trademarks.
