Intellectual Asset Management Ranks Brinks Gilson & Lione "At the Top of the IP List"
12 Attorneys Recognized in IAM Patent 1000
Published By Intellectual Asset Management June 01, 2016

CHICAGO—National law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione is “at the top of the list” again this year for intellectual property according to IAM Patent 1000 2016—The World’s Leading Patent Professionals, Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine's guide to leading private practice patent professionals and firms.

Brinks, one of the largest intellectual property law boutiques in the United States, is designated as Recommended in Illinois for patent prosecution and transactions. The firm also placed in the Silver Band in Illinois for patent litigation, in the Silver Band in North Carolina and Utah for patent firms, and in the Bronze Band in Michigan for patent firms.

The IAM Patent 1000, now in its fifth edition, quotes a source who says that Brinks “does a fantastic job in patent litigation.” The publication also praises Brinks’ patent prosecution practice, noting that it “performs flawlessly when it comes to the procurement of patents and adds tremendous value with its wider portfolio development and invention capture services.”

The IAM Patent 1000 also recognized 12 individual Brinks attorneys who were identified by clients and peers for their exceptional skill sets and insights into patent matters.

In Chicago, the publication cited Brinks president James R. Sobieraj, and his colleagues William H. Frankel, Ralph J. Gabric, Joseph F. Hetz, Laura Beth Miller, Mark H. Remus, Gary M. Ropski, and Andrew D. Stover.

The IAM Patent 1000 calls Sobieraj “one of the most experienced litigators in the land and someone to consult on high-level tactics.” The publication notes that Frankel is “an all-round IP problem solver” with broad experience in patent, trademark, and copyright law, while Gabric’s “clients love his hands-on approach to furthering their business objectives.”

One IAM source said of Hetz, “Many people are technically skilled, but not commercially minded—Joe is both. He understands the business value that can be achieved through good patent protection and what can build—and destroy—that value.”

IAM calls Miller a “passionate advocate” and cites a source who says she is “incredibly smart” and has “a lot of drive.”

“[Remus] is an experienced trial lawyer and there aren’t that many of them out there. He is a quality advocate who practices with integrity,” says another IAM source.

Of Ropski, a source says, “He tells it straight and doesn’t overreach, and that has the effect of inspiring confidence. He has all the people skills needed to be a successful attorney and is a great listener.”

IAM notes that Stover “does a great job ensuring that the litigation and prosecution teams operate in harmony. His contentious experience gives him a good sense of the pitfalls to consider when prosecuting applications and directing strategy.”

IAM also singled out Carl C. Charneski from Brinks' Washington, D.C. office; Steven L. Oberholtzer from its Ann Arbor office; Allen R. Baum from its office in Research Triangle Park, N.C.; and Ryan L. Marshall from its Salt Lake City office.

The IAM Patent 1000 seeks to identify and profile leading private practice patent professionals and firms in the world’s key jurisdictions. Individuals qualify for a listing when IAM researchers receive sufficient positive feedback from market sources with knowledge of the attorney’s practice and the market within which he or she operates. Firms qualify on the basis of their depth of experience, market presence, and the level of work on which they are typically engaged.
