Chambers USA Again Honors Brinks Gilson & Lione with Highest Ranking in IP Law, Recognizes Four Standout Attorneys
Published By Chambers USA May 26, 2017

CHICAGO—Chambers USA, an annual guide to the world’s best lawyers and law firms, has again ranked Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States, in Band 1 in the intellectual property practice area for Illinois, and has recognized four Illinois-based Brinks attorneys for their notable contributions to the practice of IP law.

Brinks is one of only three firms in the state of Illinois to receive Chambers USA’s Band 1 ranking, its highest level of distinction. The Chambers USA Guide noted that Brinks is a “strong IP litigation boutique, known to bring substantial expertise in ITC Section 337 and USPTO proceedings.” It added that the firm routinely takes on cases across the IP spectrum, with attorneys involved in trade secret, copyright, and patent infringement cases, among others.

Chambers USA again honored name shareholder Jerome Gilson, author of the landmark treatise Gilson on Trademarks, as a Senior Statesman, noting his “almost unrivaled level of experience” in proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and federal appeals courts. Gilson was first ranked in Chambers USA in 2004.

Brinks shareholder and immediate past-president Gary M. Ropski received a Band 1 ranking. Chambers quoted sources who said Ropski has a "real forte in strategy." Ropski was first ranked in Chambers USA in 2003.

Shareholder and copyright practice group chair William H. Frankel was accorded a Band 3 ranking. Chambers noted that Frankel was praised by observers as being "very knowledgeable" and held in high regard for the counsel he provides on copyright, trademark and trade secrets matters as well as his advocacy skills.  Frankel was first ranked in Chambers USA in 2013.

Shareholder Laura Beth Miller was recognized with a Band 4 ranking. Chambers quoted a source who said that Miller "really adds to the endeavor" in litigating intellectual property matters involving cutting-edge technology and social media.  Clients also see her as "the type of person who brings order to chaotic situations."  Miller was first ranked in Chambers USA in 2004.

Chambers USA assesses law firms and individual lawyers on their technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment, and other qualities valued by clients. More information is at
