April 26, 2017

CHICAGO—Marc V. Richards, a shareholder and patent attorney at intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione, will moderate the panel session “The Innovation Process,” at World Intellectual Property Day 2017, on April 26, 2017, at Columbia College Chicago’s Film Row Cinema.

Richards is a widely respected authority on patent-related issues, and has helped secure and defend the innovations of some of the world’s largest companies and newest technology start-ups. A chemical engineer with almost 25 years of legal experience, he focuses his practice on patent prosecution and litigation, inter partes and post-grant reviews before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and global patent portfolio management. Richards co-chairs Brinks’ chemicals, energy, and agriculture practice group.

Every April 26, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) marks World IP Day to celebrate the role that IP rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. The event’s 2017 theme, “Innovation – Improving Lives,” explores how the IP system supports innovation by attracting investment, rewarding creators, encouraging them to develop their ideas, and ensuring that tomorrow’s innovators can build on today’s technologies.

WIPO, a self-funding agency of the United Nations, is a global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information, and cooperation. The organization’s mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective international IP system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.
