Brinks Gilson & Lione Helps Boost Minority Participation in Legal Careers at Summer Legal Institute of Just the Beginning
CHICAGO—Minority students interested in careers in the law will receive a helpful boost at this year’s Summer Legal Institute, a program of Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization, (JTB-APO), at an August 4, 2015 session sponsored by Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the nation’s largest intellectual property law firms.
The Institute, JTB-APO's premier program, introduces the legal system and careers in law to racially and ethnically diverse high school students from underserved areas of Chicago. Approximately 50 juniors and seniors will share lunch with Brinks attorneys and attend an afternoon program to learn about intellectual property law.
'Brinks sees its work with the Summer Legal Institute as a way to open doors to young people who may not otherwise learn about careers in the profession,” said Brinks shareholder Gustavo 'Gus' Siller, Jr., who is also a member of the law firm’s Diversity Committee. “And a career in the law can be rewarding both financially and personally.”
'At Brinks, we believe law firms should reflect the diversity of the communities they serve,” adds Siller. “Participation by students in the Summer Legal Institute helps achieve this goal by promoting greater representation of minorities in law schools.”
The Summer Legal Institute's hands-on curriculum is designed to give students the resources and confidence to achieve academic and personal success. It includes classroom lectures, mock trials, panel discussions by judges and attorneys, and field trips to area law firms, government offices, and courthouses. The program also offers practical information about preparing for college, securing financial aid, and succeeding in higher education.
Brinks’s session will include an exercise in which participants draft an injunction, deliver an opening statement, and negotiate a settlement on behalf of a client in a mock trademark case.
A nonprofit founded in 1992, Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization is comprised of judges, lawyers, and other citizens dedicated to developing pipeline educational programs that inspire students of color and from other under-represented groups to pursue careers in the law, increasing diversity in the legal profession and judiciary.
